Blog Post 2- Znation “Doctor of the Dead”.

The Tv comedy show Z NATION is a show that started in 2014 and ended in 2018. The series is based upon the post-apocalypse from a zombie virus that spreads through the united states. At the beginning of the show, there’s a doctor, by the name of Dr. Merch and she is trying to find a vaccine to cure the virus. She’s tested prisoners to see which vaccine she created would work. The main character needs to make his way to California so Dr. Merch can make more vaccines. The character can’t travel alone because it’s too far since he’s all the way in New York City. A group of people that have stuck together during the apocalypse escorts him in hopes of a cure. For this assignment, I’ll be talking about one episode called “Doctor of the dead”. The aspect of real biology I’ll be looking at is Mutation.
The main character in this series is a man who goes by Murphy (He was one of the test subjects that Dr. merch teste the vaccine on) was bitten by zombies just as the correct experimental vaccine starts to kick in. The Gang must report to a lab inside of a missile silo, that can retrieve Murphy’s blood and make a vaccine. Entering the building, they discovered the truth about how the virus started and what went wrong with the samples. Moving forward, the team was sent there because they thought it was Dr. Merch, but it’s a doctor who is wanted for selling bioweapon technology to many countries. Murphy realizes that the doctor is bad and runs out of the building without decontaminating first, which causes a fail-safe nuclear weapon to go off.
The nuclear blast had a fallout that was radioactive and caused the zombies to be mutated by the radiation. This is how some zombies get called blaster’s, “Killed by the blast, mutated by the radiation” said Sam Custer (William Thomas Sadler, Season 2, Episode 3). In class, we talked about mutation and how its radiation is induced, chemical-induced, and there’s also genetic engineering, which is adding, deleting, or transporting genes from one organism to another.
